The Isolation Trap
"Having my phone number doesn't make it mentorship. Reactive mentorship is when you call someone after a problem happens. Real mentorship is identifying problems before they become problems."
Mortgage broking can be genuinely lonely, especially in the first 12 to 24 months, and it spills into everything else. An aggregator's BDM isn't a substitute for a mentor, their job is accreditation and broker education, not spotting your blind spots.
What real mentorship actually covers
- Technical capability: is the scenario, structure and compliance actually right?
- Client capability: questioning, communication and interview skills
- Commercial capability: leads, referrals, revenue and profitability
- Business capability: systems, automation, delegation and scale readiness
- Personal capability: confidence, resilience and leadership under pressure
A BDM will usually say yes to get your deal submitted; a manager checks KPIs; a coach improves performance; a mentor has actually written the business and can show you the way because they've walked it.
If you can't answer who challenges you, who keeps you accountable, and who's already where you want to go, that's not a knowledge gap. That's an ecosystem gap, and it's solvable.
